140 Spartan Student-Athletes Receive Academic All-MW Honors
Colorado Springs, Colo.— A record-number 140 San José State University student-athletes from 11 Spartan sports teams that competed in Spring 2021earned Academic All-Mountain West honors, as announced by the conference office.
The baseball team led the sports with the most award winners with 33 student-athletes. Five other teams had double-digit athletes honored – women’s soccer with 18, men’s track and field at 14, women’s track & field with 14, women’s swimming and diving with 13, and softball at 12.
Two Spartan student-athletes, Makayla Englestad from softball and Tamara Culibrk from women’s tennis, have the distinction of earning five Academic All-MW awards after the COVID shutdown in 2020 allowed them an extra year of eligibility for 2021.
Five other San José State student-athletes earned Academic All-MW honors for each of their four years at the school – Santiago Cantu (BASE), Wesley Clawson (BASE), Janessa Lozano (SB), Karlee Pottorff (WSOC), and Savannah Sendar (WTN). They join football players Jackson Burrill and Jack Snyder who also received four recognitions this academic year.
“I am very proud of our Spartans for excelling in the classroom with the many challenges presented to the learning environment as a result of the global pandemic. These student-athletes shattered the bar by producing a record-breaking number of Academic All-Mountain West honors. They represent the type of well-rounded student-athletes that our coaches bring to San Jose, and One Spartan Nation should rejoice at the tremendous efforts displayed by our student-athletes in academics and athletics this semester and this year,” said San José State Director of Athletics Jeff Konya.
For the 2020-21 academic year, 215 Spartans earned academic all-conference recognition from the Mountain West (football – 41), Western Athletic Conference (men’s soccer – 6), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (women’s water polo – 13) or the Golden Coast Conference (men’s water polo – 15).
To qualify for Academic All-MW, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic semester at the institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. The athletic contribution/participation requirement has been omitted for this award this year due to the impact of COVID-19.
In all, a league-record 2,048 student-athletes have been named to the spring 2021 Academic All-MW teams. Sports recognized include baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball.
